So what makes a good all-around stand up paddle board?

Versatility really! As the name suggests, an all-around iSUP is going to be good at doing most things. All-arounders may not be the best for paddling long distances , or the best for surfing , but they are the best if you are looking for a great board that you can take just about anywhere in a variety of conditions. From the lake to the ocean in smaller waves and a little chop. Essentially, its the jack-of-all-trades that is easy enough for a beginner to paddle but also still enjoyable for someone more experienced.

Next, an all-around iSUP also lets you do a lot of different things, from normal SUPing around to kayaking, fishing, or even yoga. If you want to do it all, then an all-around is a great choice.

So with that in mind, our best rated iSUPs on this list all have: higher weight capacities, great stability, and quality performance that allows beginners and advanced paddlers alike to have a great time on the water.

Our 120 Inflatable Sup Selection

Two Bare Feets 120 SUPs are available in two different models to cater for different budgets and style preferences. Both the Archer and Sport Air 120 SUPs feature the exact same dimensions, using the squared-off tail, pulled in nose and narrow 33 width to maximise glide.

The differences between the two come down to the technologies used to create the most rigid, high-performance board possible for the price point. The Archer uses a double stiffening strip setup, which maximises rigidity with minimal material and weight additions.

The Sport Air instead uses a Tough Fusion DWF fabric which adds an extra PVC layer, not only increasing rigidity but also durability.

How They Compare: Stability

Bestway Hydro Force Inflatable 12 Foot SUP Stand Up Paddle Board Kayak ...

There is a strong correlation with weight capacity, width and length with stability. That is the case with the top all-around SUPs on this list.

The most stable board here is the Gili Meno 116 Model X family board. The iRocker Cruiser and Thurso Waterwalker 132 are pretty close, followed by the Atoll 11 and the Diatom from Sea Gods. Of course, there is a trade-off between stability and maneuverability, so keep that in mind.

Also, remember that if you are 110 lbs you are going to be much more stable than someone weighing 230 lbs, so you might want to choose an iSUP that is a little more nimble.

Solid Vs Inflatable Sups

A major debate youll likely have when shopping for a stand up paddle board is whether you want a solid or inflatable construction. Solid boards are usually made with an EPS foam core wrapped in fiberglass and epoxy . Less common materials include carbon fiber, plastic, and wood. The benefits to solid boards are clear: they have little to no give, are more efficient in the water , dont require any set-up, and wont pop. However, the obvious drawback is that hardboards dont pack down, meaning youll need a roof rack or large truck bed for transport and ample storage space at home. In general, theyre slightly more expensive than inflatable models too, although costs are fairly comparable across the board.

While hardboards certainly have their place, inflatable designs have taken the market by storm for a few main reasons. Most obviously, they pack down into a reasonable size and fit into an accompanying backpack or roller bag, which frees up valuable storage space and makes them much easier to transport. Second, due to their construction, inflatable paddle boards provide a bit more stability on both flatwater and whitewater, and their soft feel and flat surface make them ideal for recreational cruising and activities like yoga. Finally, inflatable SUPs are generally both more affordable and longer lasting than solid paddle boards.

Gili Adventure Inflatable Sup Package

As you can guess from the name, the Gili Adventure is designed for the adventurous paddler. If you love spending time out in the water trying different SUP activities, this may be the right board for you.

I personally found the Gili Adventure to be stable enough while testing it out. But to be honest it is less stable than I expected especially compared to the other boards. However, this is likely due to the fact that it simply isnt suited to someone of my size. It tracks well enough, but it isnt as fast as Id like.

So in other words, it doesnt glide too well with my weight.

However, the Gili Adventure could still be a good match for someone lighter than 190lbs. It can be a fishing, touring, yoga, or a relaxed cruising paddle board.

It comes with a bungee system at the front and another removable rear bungee for all your paddling essentials. The board also comes with Scotty mounts and extra D-rings for gear and accessories.

The Adventure inflatable SUP board is built using dual-layer PVC. It is a sturdy yet lightweight board. The 11-foot long Adventure weighs 22 pounds, while the 12-foot version weighs 23 pounds. They can hold up to 290 pounds and 330 pounds respectively.

The Gili has a large deck pad, which is great for SUP fitness enthusiasts. It offers a comfortable platform for yoga or pilates as well as traction to keep you from slipping.

The Gili Adventure inflatable package includes a travel paddle, backpack, 2-stage hand pump, and a coiled ankle leash.

Inflatable paddle board review – Bluefin Cruise 12′

All of our 12 paddleboards have a 6 thickness which is typical for touring purposes. This allows for increased buoyancy. On top of that, the 6 thick design sustains a greater weight capacity perfect for carrying extra cargo on a longer journey. With increased volume, the board will sit higher in the water. This promotes speed and extra glide with each paddle stroke: great for long-distance journeys.

Our boards are also inflatable to an air pressure rating of 18psi in order to ensure you receive the stiffest SUP available.

How They Compare: Durability

Durability comes down to what materials are being used in the manufacturing of the iSUP, and every manufacturer on this list prides themselves in using the highest-quality materials available. You wont find a board on this list that isnt durable and dependable. Weve talked and reviewed in depth each companys manufacturing process and materials and you can feel comfortable on each of these boards.

One thing to note iRocker and Thurso Surf use 3+ layers of high quality PVC for added rigidity and durability. Isle, NIXY, and Atoll use a fusion process that mechanically fuses two layers of high quality PVC. This fusion process allows the boards to be very rigid and durable but also lighter due to using less materials.

So which is better? It kind of depends on who you talk to. Each manufacturer claims their process is the best and most durable. From our testing the last several years we have yet to see a problem with either process and can fully recommend both. Fusion tends to be lighter, but if this isnt a priority, than either construction method will suit your needs.

Two Bare Feet 120 Isups

Featured in Two Bare Feets touring category, our 120 paddleboards are designed to perform well when paddling over long distances.

120 is considered a standard length for a touring style paddleboard. It creates an elongated board shape which affords straighter tracking and higher speeds in comparison to an Allround SUP .

Offering slightly greater speed and buoyancy than our 116 Entradia model, combined with better handling than other larger touring SUPs, our 12 boards deliver superb performance. A 12 board should achieve a well-balanced compromise between speed, manoeuvrability, stability and straighter tracking when used on longer outings.

Nixy Huntington Ultra Compact Most Compact Inflatable Sup For Traveling

7 Extra Wide Multi

Some paddle boarders love to travel all over, checking out different paddle boarding spots. If that is you, the Nixy Huntington may be the right board for you.

It only weighs 18.75 pounds. Some people may question the quality of the Nixy Huntington because of its weight.

But it is built to last using dual-layer PVC and it has reinforced carbon rails. It has a weight capacity of 250 pounds when fully inflated and comes with a two-year warranty.

The Nixy Huntington is short at 96, compared to most of the other inflatable SUPs here. This length has a few advantages.

First, it makes the iSUP easy to control in any paddling condition. Second, the Huntington is unbelievably compact and folds down to a small package that you can carry anywhere.

When it comes to its features, we have no reason to complain. The Huntington has a two-fin systemtwo large side fins, all removable. It also has bungee storage at the nose and tail, additional D-rings, mounting brackets, and three grab handles.

The Nixy Huntington package is yet another thing we love about the SUP . The carbon hybrid paddle breaks into four pieces for easy transport. It is adjustable 70 to 83. Oh, and it also floats!

The dual-chamber triple-action pump has foldable legs and removable handles.

As you can see, everything about this inflatable stand up paddle board is designed to make it the perfect traveling SUP. It would be a great option if you are an adventurous paddler.

Inflatable Sup Dimensions And Volume

LengthMost recreational paddle boards are between 9 and 11 feet long, while touring- and racing-focused designs can be as long as 14 feet. A basic rule of thumb is as follows: the shorter the board, the less surface area it will have and the more maneuverable it will be. Other dimensions like width and thickness matter too, but generally speaking, shorter boards excel on flat water where you dont need the extra stability , while longer models travel straighter and faster and are favored for open water and touring.

In addition to the category of board and intended use, choosing the right length of your SUP depends on the weight of the person riding it. Many manufacturers provide a recommended weight range: the NRS Thrive, for example, recommends the 910 version for paddlers up to 180 pounds, the 103 version for paddlers up to 200 pounds, the 108 version for paddlers up to 250 pounds, etc. Simply put, a shorter board is lighter and has less surface area, so heavier paddlers will push it further down into the water, making it less stable and more difficult to ride. Once youve settled on your desired style of board and even the specific model, you can choose a final length based on the paddler. And keep in mind that not all boards are offered in multiple lengths, but we certainly appreciate the option when they are.

Isle Switch 2 In 1 Inflatable Sup/kayak

The ISLE Switch is a newer addition to this list, and a super exciting addition. It is a 2 in 1 SUP/Kayak hybrid, and so far the only board of its type that weve found to offer great performance as either a kayak or a SUP.

Being 116 x 35.5 the ISLE Switch is supremely stable, but its also incredibly lightweight at just 19 lbs. This takes away any of the heavy, cumbersome feeling that sometimes comes with larger boards, and allows you to pick up a surprisingly level of speed for a board of this size. Its also easy to maneuver, and while a bit slower to turn with sweeping strokes, it doesnt require much effort from the paddler.

Performance aside, the Switch is extremely versatile even outside of its 2 in 1 label. The Switch showcases what ISLE has termed their ISLE-LINK Connect System, which is a series of polyester loops that run from nose to tail along both rails of the SUP. They allow you endless possibilities in fine tuning your kayak seat and footrest placement, adjusting your cargo area sizes, adding more attachments, anchoring down extra gear, or even attaching a second kayak seat to make this SUPYak a tandem.

We were also impressed with the Switchs included accessory list, as ISLE has made sure to include everything necessary to get you out on the water SUPing or kayaking, with the inflatable kayak seat and footrest being our favorite inclusion.

This is, without a doubt, the best 2 in 1 hybrid board available.

How They Compare: Performance And Versatility

The first thing you need to understand when it comes to performance is that your personal performance on each board will vary depending on:

  • Skill level an experienced SUP boarder will be much better on boards with lighter weight capacity and might find they enjoy how such boards are more maneuverable and playful.
  • Weight if you weigh 120 pounds your experience is going to be much different than someone weighing 180 or 220 lbs.

We found great performance with each paddle board on this list . Each board performs really well, and the differences are slight, but important.

Overall, the performance on the iRocker Cruiser was the best it worked great for beginners to advanced and from lighter to heavier paddlers. For larger people and for those really concerned with balance issues we found the Meno 116 performed the best. Smaller individuals typically liked either the iROCKER Cruiser or, if they were more experienced, they preferred the NIXY Newport. And for those who arent strong paddlers, the ThursoSurf Waterwalker glides and moves just a little bit faster in flat conditions than the iRocker Cruiser. The Meno 116X also glides well, but is bigger so its a little harder to get going.

Guidelines For A Beginner Paddler / All

Best Inflatable Paddle Boards of 2022 | Our Experts Top 11 Picks
Paddler Weight
6 10’0″-12’6″

IMPORTANT! The recommendation of 5 inch thickness for most of the weight ranges comes with a caveat: Just like with smartphones and laptops, making a thinner product with excellent strength and rigidity requires better materials and construction methods, which is likely to cost a bit more than a thicker product made from cheaper materials.

For more advanced paddlers, the recommended proportions can differ quite a bit depending on any specialized intended uses of the board, but here is a general guide for more experienced paddlers wanting a board for all around use including flat water cruising, light surfing and moderate distance touring:
