Kayaking At Elkhorn Slough
Kayaking at Elkhorn Slough has become a popular activity, so the safety of paddlers and boaters and their impact on wildlife and the environment have become urgent concerns. The best way to have a safe trip with low impact on the environment is to stay informed.
Weve provided a map and information to help you enjoy your boating experience on the slough.
The Road to Kirby Park is open. The Slough-side Trail was repaired July 2021 and is open to the public.
A few years ago, winter storms weakened the road that leads to Kirby Park. For safety reasons, the County closes the road during the winter season. It has been re-opened.
Although the Elkhorn Slough Foundation cares for the slough-side trail, we do not own or maintain the road, launch ramp or parking lot.
Kirby Park is managed by the Moss Landing Harbor District. The damaged road is managed by Monterey County. Monterey County has not provided any information as to when the road leading to Kirby Park will be fixed.
We do not rent kayaks at the Reserve. There are kayak companies in Moss Landing, Santa Cruz and Monterey that rent kayaks, stand up paddle boards and other boats for use in the Elkhorn Slough. A quick internet search will get you started.
Youll find a restroom at the put-in site at the North Harbor, near the Kayak shops in Moss Landing, but not along the waterway.
Kayak Slip Dock Safe Launch

The ramp has an adjustable placement mount on the front side to get the proper slope required on the ramp to ensure that the ramp is completely universal no matter type of kayak or who is using it.

How Ez Launch Works
EZ Launch can be easily incorporated into any EZ Dock configuration, allowing for various waterfront arrangements based on your needs and preferences. Our kayak launch system is easy to use for both experienced and novice kayakers. To get started, carry your kayak out to the launch and set it in the V-shaped funnel. Once your kayak is in the launch area, you can safely enter your kayak without getting wet or worrying about the boat floating away.
Once seated in your kayak, youll use your paddle to pull yourself into the water. The paddle notches along the sides of the launch allow you to effectively pull yourself and your kayak into and out of the water. To enter the launch from the water, simply paddle up to the entry, secure your paddle into the notches and pull to slide your kayak out of the water. Once your kayak is back in the launch, you can safely exit your kayak directly on the dock.
With kayak storage straps, you can even use EZ Launch to store your kayak, making it even easier to take your paddle craft out on a whim.

When To Use Ez Launch Residential

Why Registration Is Important
Registration numbers provide identification for the return of stolen or found boats. Registration also helps locating persons involved in boating accidents, identifying vessels requesting assistance, and helps identify vessels violating the law. Registration fees are used to fund resource protection, educational programs, access areas and their maintenance, and fund safety patrols.
When a vessel is in use, the vessels registration card must be on board. Boaters stopped by Fish and Wildlife Natural Resources Police who do not have a valid registration card on board may be issued a ticket. It is the responsibility of the vessels operator to be sure the vessel is registered, has all required safety equipment, and that it is being operated in a safe manner.

Moss Landing Harbor Safety
Be aware and safe within the Harbor Area although the Slough is rather calm and serene, the harbor area near the mouth poses several challenges to paddlers.
Currents within the harbor areaPeak tidal currents tunneling under the Highway 1 bridge create areas of rough water which can cause boats to capsize or be difficult to paddle against, potentially sweeping you into the pilings and docks or out to sea.
Boat TrafficMany fishing boats and pleasure craft use the harbor entrance. Kayaks and canoes can be difficult to see. Observe the rules of the road and stay to the extreme right hand side of the channel or in the shallow areas entirely out of the main channel. Always turn your boat into the wake of a larger boat.
