If you were born after January 1, 1984, you must be certified to operate a boat. You may be asked to show your Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card when renting a boat. This card allows those individuals born after January 1, 1984, to legally operate a motorized vessel or personal watercraft on Lake of the Ozarks and all other lakes in Missouri. The Missouri Boating Safety Certification Card might sound like its hard to obtain, but all it means is you have received some education about boating safely in Missouri.

Beginning March 1, 2021, individuals can order and pay for their temporary boating safety identification card online from their mobile device or PC, complete a boating safety checklist of common boating laws, and acknowledge they have reviewed The Handbook of Missouri Boating Laws and Responsibilities as required in Missouri Revised Statute 306.127.
