While the Topwater is very stable, it is definitely more at home on ponds, creeks, and small lakes where chop is at a minimum and the distances from A to B are shorter.

You probably wont be winning any speed or distance races with the Topwater, but thats not what it was designed for.

If you mainly fish larger bodies of open water, I would look at something built for that environment. A longer hull and a sleeker design would probably suit the average fisherman better under those circumstances.

I remember the first time seeing a pedal-powered kayak and thinking, Thats odd. Why would anyone want to do that?

And now I cant get enough of using the pedals. Im addicted.

Its not like I havent given the paddle a fair chance. I have a 16 foot Necky in the garage with a good old Werner paddle. Ive used it a lot but it just requires, you know, paddling.

Old Town knows their canoes and kayaks. Theyve been making them since 1868. The pedal powered versions are a more recent product and a welcome addition.

The Topwater PDL 106 kayak is a 106 sit-on-top kayak with a pedal drive aimed at fishing but can be used for any kind of flat water kayaking.

Old Town Topwater 106 Angler: A Good Kayak In A Small Package

Sometimes, bigger isnt better. I had the opportunity to take the new Old Town Topwater in its 10-foot 6-inch incarnation for a test spin, and it held its own on small water.

At 10 feet 6 inches long, the Topwater is designed for fishing those ponds and small lakes that may be more difficult to access with a larger fishing kayak. Ive struggled in the past with the lack of portability of bigger, heavier kayaks.

The Topwater offers a solution for getting in and out quickly, even when the path to water isnt clear.

On the water, the Topwater is maneuverable and extremely stable. Overall, the Topwater performed nicely getting in and out of tight spots. This kayak was made for the small lake or pond fisherman and holds its own in that environment.

When I was growing up, my Dad and I were carrying the canoe next to a relatively steep hill. He slipped, and we dropped the canoe down the hill.

After we chased it down the hill and caught up to it, we inspected every inch of it. We didnt find a single mark on the entire canoe!

So for that reason, once Old Town started releasing pedal kayaks, I got excited to check them out because I knew they were going to be straight-up quality. Ive already written a review of the Old Town 120 PDL, but its time to write a review of the 106 PDL as well.

Old Town Topwater 106 is a nice paddling and stable fishing kayak for its size. Not too heavy and tracks well. The front hatch is nice, but it is a little small. An extra paddle will not in the front hatch, but my rod and reels will store in it. There is an area in the rear tankwell molded for a crate, but none of my crates will fit in it. No big deal since the tankwell is very large just a little odd. This kayak is stable enough for me to leave it in the high seat position even bay fishing. The primary con for me with this kayak is a lot of water pools from the scuppers. I was not expecting this since it has such a high weight capacity and I weigh around 200 pounds.

Things To Consider Before Buying

If youre a casual outdoorsman or are new to fishing, the Topwater PDL 106 has most of the features and custom options youre looking for. But it wont come cheaply. If youre on a tighter budget or arent sure how much youll enjoy fishing, Id recommend going with a less expensive model to start.

Theres no shortage of cheaper fishing kayaks that still have great stability and custom options to play with. One of my favorites is the Sea Ghost 130 from Vibe that comes at a much lower price but still features plenty of gear tracks, great stability, and a really comfortable seat.

The Topwater PDL isnt that long for a pedal kayak measuring just ten and a half feet long, but it still will require a sizable storage area and a vehicle capable of safely transporting it.

Ideally, your storage spot will be in a climate-controlled area like a garage, although a covered shed will be fine. For transportation, plan on investing in a roof rack for your car unless you have a truck with a large bed.

Also, the Topwater 106 PDL is out of stock everywhere. Id recommend the Sportsman 106 PDL instead since its the newer, upgraded version]
