Paddle Surfing With Sea Lions
At the selected time, we’ll gather at and walk a few yards to Mother’s Beach, where we’ll begin a two-hour paddleboard tour of this area of Los Angeles.
First, we’ll give you a brief introduction on how to handle the boards, and then we’ll head out into the Pacific waters. As we paddle around the harbor, we’ll see fishing boats and spot the many sea lion colonies resting on the docks.
What’s more, we’ll tell you thousands of interesting facts about these animals. For example, did you know that they have external ears? This causes them to swim at a shallower depth than seals. We might also be able to hear the distinctive sounds they make to communicate with each other.
As we paddle around the harbor, we’ll also spot dozens of hawks, seagulls, and pelicans. Keep a close eye on the waves as well – this area is also home to friendly dolphins!
Lastly, we’ll make our way back to the beach to return to the paddle surfboards, ending the experience.

For those interested in taking up paddleboarding, there probably isnt a better place to learn than Marina del Rey. Paddle Method and Pro SUP Shop both have locations on Marina Mothers Beach, named after its calm waters that can help beginning swimmers when getting acquainted with the ocean. If youre already a seasoned paddleboarder and want to further challenge yourself, take up yoga paddleboarding. Yogaqua , which combines the practice of yoga with paddleboarding, is also located on Mothers Beach.

Less Crowded Beaches Near Santa Monica
Besides the water sport culture such as paddle boarding, boating, jet skiing in Marina del Rey, there is a surprisingly less inhabited beach there, just south of Venice. Im a beach bum & river rat, probably a dolphin in my last life. As a resident of West LA, the thought of going to the beach on weekends get me grumpy thinking of all the crowds. I was in Marina del Rey 2 weekends ago at a friends condo and walked along the bike route from Marina to Venice. There was a major difference just an inch apart across the city-lines! A few families and individuals gracefully played volleyball and laid out in Marina. But as soon as you crossed over to Venice, massive crowds of Hippies, muscle-men, tourists, potheads, and gypsy psychic readers frolicked the scene.
Venice is great when youre in the mood, but if youre looking to relax on the beach with a book on a Saturday, Marina del Rey is a hidden gem worth noting.
PRO SUP Shop is a good, reliable booth to rent Paddle Boards in Marina del Rey. Its located on the sand near Killer Shrimp restaurant.

Our guide Walker was just great with lots of info about the sea lions and the boats. We didn’t realize we were going to be paddling inside a marina which made for easy paddling. But just different than we thought the photo depicted. Looking now it does look like a dock.

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding aka SUP has become a very popular trend these days, though it originated back to the 1960s from beach boys in Waikiki, Hawaii. SUP is a less demanding sport than surfing, fit for all ages and body types. All thats required is a paddle board, very similar to a surf board but typically larger & sturdier and 1 paddle. You can practically paddle board on any type of water surface, most popular is lakes or beaches. Paddle boarding is an amazing way to get in shape, working out all your core through balance on the board, using your waist & back to turn the paddle as well as the arms. Way more fun than being at the gym!
My first lessons was with a professional named Wade in Marina del Rey. He recommended we start at 7 am for a calmer wave and less traffic in the bay. As a beginner, its recommended to start early before the sun hits the water, which causes temperature changes as the wakes become stronger. For any other reason to be up that early, Id be the grouchiest of the grouch. But this particular morning I was perky for this occasion. I love the water. The weather in Marina del Rey was a bit gloomy and chilly this morning. Nonetheless, being up early on the water is a beauty of its own, independent of the weather. I was with 3 other beginners and we learned the basics on the sand. Then paddled out around the Marina for 2 hours.

Mothers Beach In Marina Del Rey Is Perfect For Family Fun
Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey is the perfect beach for families as well as those who want to go kayaking or paddleboarding. I found a Groupon for a paddleboarding deal at the Pro SUP Shop which is located right at the beach. It was such an enjoyable day being able to swim in the calm water and relax on the sand. The Marina Beach was not crowded at all which made it easy to social distance.

This beach is one of the most family-friendly beaches in LA. Parking is $10 for the whole day or 25¢ for every 10 minutes. Picnic tables, volleyball nets, and the playground are all currently unavailable due to COVID-19. However, the restrooms are still open and you can rent paddleboards or kayaks to use. I ordered the cutest and I thought I would be able to use it at the beach. What I didnt see is a faded sign that says no floats or rafts of any kind are allowed. At least the lifeguards let me get a few cute pictures before asking me to get my float out of the water.
