Diving in California is good year-round. Visibility is typically 10m or better. Some dive sites, such as Casino Point in Catalina, regularly have 18m visibility or more. A lot depends on the dive sites location and weather conditions.
From November through May, most divers in Southern California wear a 7 mm wetsuit with a hood, booties and gloves. June through October some divers switch to a 5 mil or dont wear a hood, but youll also see divers in drysuits year-round. In Northern California, youll want a 7 mil with a hooded vest, booties and gloves, or a drysuit. Scuba Diving Laws In California
When scuba diving, the diver is expected to follow a set of rules as set by their state government. If you are in California, you should observe the basic operation procedures laid out by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations. All the scuba diving schools and certification agencies conduct sessions while abiding by the rules set forth by the state government.
As per the law, every diver shall be accompanied by another diver and they shall stay in close touch as long as the operation goes on. The maximum permitted death for scuba diving is 190 fsw. However, the maximum limit applies only for scientific and technical diving operations. Moreover, the diver going to that depth needs to be certified for the depth reached. As a general law, scuba diving cannot be performed at depths more than 100 fsw unless there is proper arrangement for emergency evacuation of the diver in a specific location. The law also necessitates the use of an underwater depth gauge and a time-keeping device.

Msci 3: Scientific Diving Techniques
MSCI 380: Scientific Diving Techniques provides an introduction to the techniques for conducting scientific research underwater using SCUBA, including transects, quadrats, behavioral observations, videography and photography, and many other tools. In addition to lectures and pool training sessions, there will be a significant number of open water dives. The course will provide the 100 hours of required training of scientific dives as prescribed by the American Academy of Underwater Sciences . Topics and skills to be introduced:

Located just north of San Diego, the seaside village of La Jolla is a superb place to kayak, surf, SUP, snorkel and scuba dive. What About The Actual Course How Does It Work
The course is going to take about 4 days, aka. 2 full weekends. On Saturdays we go to the pool, on Sundays we go to the ocean.
The first weekend you are going to learn basic skills and learn to get comfortable with this new gear and breathing underwater. On Saturday you will perform basic mask and regulator skills in the pool and on Sunday you will do those exact same skills, but in the ocean!!
The second weekend we’re going to get into more “advanced” skills that you will be more than ready for because… the whole time in between both weekends you’ve been studying in your Open Water Manual and completing the knowledge reviews at the end of each chapter!
On your second Saturday, you will head to the pool for your second pool session in the morning then join Keline in the classroom in the shop at 1PM to go over the quizzes in depth so everything is fresh in your mind when you take your final exam!
And then finally your final ocean trip on Sunday where you can complete your course in one or two final dives and enjoy an extra dive with your instructor, no skills needed, just practice your buoyancy and enjoy flying with the fish!
Cost Of Diving In Norcal
Since much of the diving in California is shore diving, the dives themselves are free. Renting recreational gear from a local shop can cost anywhere from $75-$110 for a full kit.
To dive from a boat costs an additional $140 for a 3 dive day.
If you are coming in from out of town and booking a shore dive through a dive shop, the price of the dive guide will vary depending on whether youre guided with a group of divers, or privately with an instructor.
This can range from $35 per person with a group up to $100 an hour with a private guide.
The cost of the dives will always be in addition to the cost of renting gear, so if you own any gear that will work in cold water, it is worth bringing it with you to save on rental gear costs!

Cordell Bank Marine Sanctuary Fanny Shoal Hurst Shoal
This region is the closest spectacular diving location to San Francisco, but it is not generally available to the recreational diving community.
A permit is required to dive in Cordell Marine Sanctuary for either scientific or educational purposes.
These dive spots are 40-50 miles off the coast of the city, just North of the Farallon Islands and therefore only accessible by boat when in possession of required permits.
