Our contributor Micki Browning spent several years in Key Largo and while she is familiar with the other Keys and their diving, Key Largos dive sites are what inspired her to write her dive mysteries set in the Keys. Mer, the marine biologist heroine character, visits many of them in the pages of Adrift and Beached, two of the Mer Cavallo Mysteries.

Usns General Hoyt S Vandenberg Wreck

This wreck is one of the greatest attractions and most famed dive sites of Key West. The Ex-Military Missile Tracking Ship was only sunk in 2009, but signs of marine life and coral structures have quickly made their home in its nooks and crannies. This ship is a massive 524ft , with the honor of being the second largest vessel in the world ever purposely sunk to become an artificial reef. Sitting at depths of 70-100ft , this advanced dive is a must for those planning Key West diving and looking to complete their Florida Keys Wreck Trek.

Where To Stay In Key Largo

One of the biggest things to consider when choosing where to stay is what you plan to do when your not diving. Do you want to be able to walk to dinner? Do you want to be able to walk to and from the dive boat? If you answered yes to either of these then you should find a hotel at MM103 or MM100. Both locations have different dive shops and restaurant/bars within walking distance. If you stay anywhere else you will most likely need to do some driving.

Key Largo is home to a few traditional hotel brands with varying amenities and several different boutique style motels. You may be able to find some Airbnb type accommodations but due to local zoning rules these can be difficult to come across. Some places will have pools while others will not and that is also the case with bay side beaches. Some have food onsite while many do not. If you are particular about the amenities youd like to have contact us and we will help guide you in the right direction.

In addition to Key Largo you could also stay in Tavernier or Islamorada (pronounced eye-la-morada. Both of these locations are within a 25 minute drive and still in the Florida Keys. If you are ok staying outside of the keys Homestead and Florida City are within a 30-40 minute but these are not vacation areas.

We can package your hotel, dive trips, and other activities from Key Largo to Key West.

This state park is a great location for Key Largo snorkeling.

Suffice it to say, camping in the heat when you have to do a couple of days diving in Key Largo is not a great idea. We ended up spending our third night with a friend who, sanely, spent her night at the Holiday Inn Express.

But, of course, you can always come back to do your water activities here. John Pennekamp State Park has one of the best sites to do snorkeling in the Keys.

Key Largo Diving August 2022

KEY LARGO To understand why Key Largo, the northernmost island in the Florida Keys, holds such a revered position in the dive pantheon, it is important first to recognize the role geology has played, beginning in prehistoric times.

Key Largo Geology – In the Pleistocene Epoch, about 1.8 million years ago, the global sea levels dropped due to glaciation at the polar caps and the Florida Keys emerged from the sea. The sea continued to fall, eventually dropping about 350 feet lower than it is today. The shoreline was five to ten miles seaward of the present Keys, and Florida Bay was dry land. Soil and vegetation began to build mature islands from what was once coral reef. Then about 15,000 years ago, the climate began to warm significantly.

Carysfort Reef – Situated near the northern boundary of the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, Carysfort reef was named for a ship that ran aground here in 1770.

The large island blocked the daily tidal flow of turbid and nutrient rich waters from Florida Bay, which fostered the growth of corals. But perhaps as significantly, the reefs off Key Largo happened to be in proximity to the flow of the Gulf Stream, a giant oceanic current flowing from the south bringing a steady supply of clear water, embryonic corals, and pelagic marine life to continually replenish these reefs. Nature had generously provided the mix of elements necessary to assure an underwater wonderland.
