    Dive Site : Thistlegorm Wreck

The Thistlegorm Wreck is located on the west coast of the Sinai Peninsula, 40 kilometers away from Sharm el Sheikh. The Thistlegorm is a 126.5 meters long British wartime materials transport ship. It sank vertically on a plain, sandy seabed 15 – 35 meters underwater after being hit by two bombs launched by German Heinkel HE III bombers on October 6, 1941.

Jacques Cousteau discovered the shipwreck and cited it in a February 1956 National Geographic Magazine published article but did not disclose the actual whereabouts of the wreck. It was re-traced with the help of an Israeli fishing boat captain in 1991 and became a world-famous WWII relic dive site in an instant.

Due to its depth and hard diving conditions, we recommend to be at least a certified advanced diver. If desired, you can descend with one of the mooring lines to the top of the Thistlegorm. Once arrived, you can swim around the shipwreck and explore the stunning canons. If the conditions are good, it is possible to enter the shipwreck. Make sure that your buoyancy is perfectly balanced as the space within the wreck can be very limited.

You should definitely watch out for the jeeps, motorbikes, and other WOII stuff which is still present. Make sure that you donât touch anything!

Tip: Around the SS Thistlegorm, locomotives / trains can still be found. Note that the locomotive is located out of sight so you should swim around 50 meters away from the Thistlegorm to find this train.

    Sinai Peninsula Dive Adventure

Highlights: turtles, schooling fish & big pelagics, non diving activities……Sharm El Sheikh’s diving environment: wreck diving, wall diving, drift diving, beginner and advanced divers, very popular…

The historic peninsula of Sinai lies at the extreme northern end of the Red Sea, cut off on its west coast from the Egyptian mainland by the Gulf of Suez, and from the Arabian peninsula on its east coast by the Gulf of Aqaba. This area has had a rather bloody past but that doesn’t stop scuba divers flocking to see this underwater wonderland now.

Located quite close to the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh is the most popular dive destination in the Red Sea and is the departure port for many liveaboard safaris around the peninsula and the northern Red Sea, as well as for diving day trips from the local holiday resorts.

The local sites are often used for student training and for introduction dives. However, you don’t need to travel far before you reach the exciting stuff.

It should not be forgotten too that Sharm El Sheikh isn’t so far from the dive sites of northern Hurghada so wrecks such as the Rosalie Moller and the Abu Nuhas family of wrecks are often visited by Sinai liveaboards departing from Sharm.

Dive Site : Shark Reef And Yolanda Reef

The Shark reef and the Yolanda reef are two world-famous underwater island dive sites. The dive sites are located closely to each other and therefore we have combined these dives sites. Shark Reef is a 70-meter vertical reef wall drop that is covered with multi-colored soft corals. Yolanda Reef on the other hand features a wide plateau of the coral garden with lots of pinnacle corals. The depth of these dive sites ranges between 10 and 35 meters.

Note that currents can be strong in this area so these dive sites are more suitable for advanced divers. Diverse marine biodiversity here includes the batfish, crocodile fish, groupers, turtles, scorpionfish, tuna, big moray eels, napoleon wrasse, red snappers, unicornfish, barracudas, and the blacktip shark pelagics.

Dive Sharm El Sheikhs Iconic Wrecks

Nice to not only honour this wreck but also look at other wrecks in the area. Lets call it official Wreck Month. S.S Thistlegorm is perhaps the most famous wreck of them all. She came to rest on the seabed just off Shaab Ali on the fateful night of 6th October 1941 when nine lives were lost.Sharm as a diving destination is known more for its beautiful reefs and diverse fish life than its wrecks. However there are probably more wrecks within easy reach by the Red Sea College daily boats and within recreational dive limits than other destinations.

Dunraven is another wreck lying on the reef of Shaab Mahmoud which is easily dived by daily boat. The wreck is a great dive for first-time wreck divers as the up-turned hull is easy to navigate and unlike UK and European wrecks, there is very little silt to disturb.

The Kormoran is another great shallow wreck dive which is often forgotten. She lies on the outer reef of North Lagoona on Tiran Island, one of the most spectacular aspects of this wreck is the abundance of hard coral formations around her.

Just on the opposite side of the channel is the Million Hope, which in good weather conditions is nice to explore. Access can be difficult due to the strong winds and surface current. Sometimes it is only possible to dive her from a Zodiac.

Ten Of The Best Places To Scuba Dive In Egypt

Egypt has been a favourite of scuba divers for the better part of half a century thanks to its proximity to the Red Sea, which runs along the entirety of Egypts eastern coastline. First brought to the worlds attention by Hans and Lotte Haas award-winning black-and-white documentary Adventures in the Red Sea, and later popularised by Jacques-Yves Cousteaus 1956 full-colour documentary The Silent World, the Egyptian Red Sea is now regarded as one of the best scuba diving destinations on the planet.

The clear blue waters of the Red Sea, a product of increased salinity due to high evaporation over the desert and very little in the way of rainfall, hosts 1,200 species of fish and more than 200 species of coral. The narrow straits of Bab El Mandab far to the south, which connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, allows much in the way of species crossover, yet almost 20 per cent of the Red Seas residents are endemic.

Much of Egypts dive tourism over the years has centred around large resorts such as Hurghada on the mainland and Sharm El Sheikh, situated on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, but there are plenty of options for dive tourists, and many people forget that Egypts northern coastline lies along the shores of the Mediterranean. Here are ten of the best places to scuba dive in Egypt
